What Are The Benefits Of A Sump Pump?
When it comes to sump pumps, there are a few rules to take into consideration. If you’re lucky and have a basement that has never flooded, you may never need to purchase a sump pump. But, if your home is one of the 90% that has experienced some form of water penetration, flooding or reoccurring leaks, you will need to look into solutions for moving the water away from your foundation.
What Are The Benefits Of A Sump Pump?
A sump pump can catch the water and pump it away from the foundation of your home before is enters your basement and is an absolute necessity in areas where the water table is high and can get higher during a heavy rain.
And, since most flooding occurs following severe weather episodes, sump pump systems have been designed with battery back-ups to ensure that the sump pump continues to operate during power failures.
In fact, it is recommended to install 2 or 3 sump pumps if that is what your basement requires. Better to be safe than sorry. For a small one-time investment, you get basement flood protection and peace of mind. The backup pump is inexpensive flood insurance.
The 3 Rules To Follow When Installing A Sump Pump System
If you are a novice, installing a sump pump can be tricky business. Dangerous situations can arise and it is highly recommended that you hire a qualified professional to install your sump pump.
When installing a sump pump system, keep in mind the following rules:
Rule #1: Make Sure You Know What Lies Beneath
Before you get out the jackhammer and start breaking through your concrete floor, try to anticipate what might lie beneath it. The danger is in hitting the sewer line or the home’s main water supply line.
How will you know where the waterline is? If the service line runs under the floor, it normally will enter from the street, approximately 6ft. from the sewer pipe. If you’re not sure where the water service line is, you can get the drain plan from the city, or get a plumber to scope the location.
Rule #2: Selecting The Right Type of Sump Pump
If your basement depends on a sump pump, you need a backup sump pump! For a small one-time investment, you get basement flood protection and peace of mind. The back-up sump pump is inexpensive flood insurance. We always recommend using a submersible pump and have been using the Triple Guard Sump Pump system as our go-to solution for a primary and secondary sump pump as well as a battery back-up system.
With a secondary sump pump included in the Triple Guard System, you can feel secure that if the first pump cannot keep up with water flow and becomes overwhelmed, the second pump will take over and run simultaneously. In the event of power failure – a third battery back-up sump pump will take over – automatically!
An audible and visual alarm warns of backup pump operation in the case of a power failure.
The RCC WATERPROOFING / TRIPLE GUARD SYSTEM offers the most reliable system in Canada. With a secondary sump pump included in the Triple Guard System, property owners can feel secure that if the first pump cannot keep up with water flow and becomes overwhelmed, the second pump will take over and run simultaneously. In the event of power failure – a third battery back-up sump pump will take over – automatically!
Rule #3: Make Sure You Choose the Right Location
The ideal location for the sump pump is usually the utility room. But, you have to keep in mind where the discharge of water is ideal. If the utility room is located next to a large hill that slopes towards your home, the discharge of water will run back towards the house. You will also want to make sure that the discharge is at least 3 ft away from a hydro panel.
If the utility room is not optimal and the ideal location is in a more open area of the basement, you can enclose the area where the sump pump is located with a small closet.
It is important to check your sump pump regularly to make sure that it is in proper working condition.

The cost for RCC to install a sump pump can range from $1700 – $2900 depending on the model. This includes a Sump Pump with a battery back-up pump.
